Background
At Woodside Priory we see our students as participants in and shapers of a complex and ever-changing world. As such, Priory seeks to aid students in becoming global citizens through global curriculum, experiences, and institutional support. The Priory Global Education Program promotes real world engagement through strategic partnerships and global immersion experiences based on the values of mutual respect, cross-cultural understanding, equity, and justice. Global education programs are immersive experiences designed to inspire and empower Priory students to be change makers on a global level.
Purpose
This summer Priory faculty will lead a Summer Service Learning and Science Study Abroad Program to Kenya, titled Exploring Culture and Ecology in Kenya. This program, designed for high school students, will highlight both the human cultural and biological diversity of this unique country. It will include an eight-day stay at the Daraja Academy of Kenya, one of the first all-girls, private schools established for girls of promise without financial means to attend secondary school. In addition to learning with and from Daraja students in student centered activities and school classes, Priory students will also serve. Service learning experiences will include helping construct and maintain facilities such as the sustainable farm that serves Daraja's cafeteria, as well as teaching / tutoring Daraja peers, and completing artwork to beautify the campus. In addition to service learning and intercultural exchange at Daraja Academy, Priory students will spend three days on safari exploring wildlife reserves at national parks and private reserves near the school. Students will gain an appreciation of the interconnected nature of the animals and people of the Rift Valley of East Africa, one of nature’s most diverse and complex ecosystems.
